When the Great Recession hit in 2008, markets worldwide were impacted, but the devastation was particularly felt in the U.S., affecting families across the country, including my own. Amid the financial turbulence and rampant unemployment, I no longer wanted to work for anyone else. I wanted to be my own boss, controlling my own business, being held accountable to myself and no other.
